Ivan ` s story

Ivan Horushko is 14 years old and currently studying in the 9th grade. He hails from the picturesque city of Lyman in Donetsk Oblast. Ivan has always been passionate about learning, especially English, which he began studying at the age of 5. His enthusiasm for the language has been evident to his family and teachers.

Before the war, Ivan’s life was full of joy and various activities. He achieved success in Ukrainian language competitions since the 2nd grade and swam three times a week. His childhood was vibrant and happy, but everything changed with the onset of the war in February 2022. Ivan’s home was destroyed and looted, his school burned down, and the city turned into ruins. His family lost all their belongings, including Ivan’s beloved collection of construction toys.

Now, Ivan and his family are renting an apartment in Dnipro and miss their home deeply. Seeing how difficult it is for his parents, Ivan sometimes works as a promoter to help them out. Despite the challenges, he is grateful for the opportunity provided by the “Hope – Children of Ukraine” project, which allows him to continue studying English for free, bringing him great joy.

This year, Ivan decided to learn to play the guitar and began attending a music school. His mother helps him find interesting projects and learning opportunities. His dream is to enroll in the International Relations Lyceum. He visited the school in May, and for the first time since the war began, his eyes lit up with hope. On June 14, Ivan passed his exams and received a certificate of enrollment in the 9th grade. However, there is one challenge—tuition is not free.

Ivan understands the importance of education at this particular institution, which offers advanced language studies, engaging projects, and high-quality European education.
