Recently, at the initiative of Hope-Children of Ukraine, a webinar for educators was held on the topic “Development of a unified assessment system for an online English language school.” The keynote speaker of the event was Olga Leontyeva, a teacher-methodologist with over 20 years of experience, who teaches English to children in our free courses. The event was attended by 9 teachers who shared their thoughts and experiences on the role of assessment in the educational process, as well as discussed innovative approaches to motivating and encouraging students.

Key points of the webinar and ideas generated during the discussion:

  1. Purpose of assessment: webinar participants came to the consensus that assessment serves a diagnostic function, acts as a motivational factor, and is a tool for constructive feedback. Assessment should be aimed at supporting continuous development rather than ranking students.
  2. Assessment methods: teachers emphasized the need for dynamic assessment strategies that take into account individual student reactions.
  3. Innovative tools: speakers highlighted the effectiveness of non-standard tools for engaging students in online English language courses. One of the examples provided was tracking reading, writing, and task completion using a structured table.
  4. Engagement of teenagers: emphasizing the importance of involving teenagers in the learning process, one of the speakers advocated for creative methods aimed at supporting student interest.
  5. Incentive systems: teachers noted that some students willingly complete additional tasks in exchange for greater rewards.
  6. Common and uncommon challenges: webinar participants discussed methods for addressing typical conflict situations that arise during assessment and discussed various methods of obtaining feedback from students, such as through text messages or photos.

Thus, during the webinar, teachers not only discussed numerous aspects of assessment but also exchanged best educational practices for greater engagement and successful learning of our students.
